Although storage devices do not cease to increase their capacity, there are many circumstances in which we need to split a very large file into chunks of a given size. Maybe you want to divide a movie file to make it fit into a CD or send a large file over email through an account with size restrictions.
Most people do not even know that splitting a file is a basic operation available right from the command line, but this is rather troublesome as you will need to use some difficult-to-remember parameters.
Archivers, or programs used to compress files, also offer to split a source file into output files of a given size. Even some email clients can automatically split large attachments or recombine them upon reception.
Despite the existence of various alternatives for file splitting, an application that can help you do it with no effort may come in handy. Free File Splitter is an unsophisticated piece of software intended to split files into smaller chunks or carry out the reverse process: putting those files together again.
The program does not require installation. Its interface is as simple as it can be. The two processes have been separated in different tabs, which favor simplicity.
To split a file, all you need to do is to select the input file and the output folder. You can easily choose the maximum size of the chunks from some preset sizes (diskette, Zip drive, CD, DVD) or you can enter a custom size. Just click on “Split”, and that is about all.
Joining files cannot be any easier. Just tell the program the name and location of any of the chunks and the program will automatically recognize all the other pieces (provided they are in the same location). Then, tell the program where you want to save the recombined file and press “Join”.
